Wheaton "Citizens of the Year" Dinner

Club members Irene Wheaton, VE1CF and Bill Wheaton, VE1CFK, were selected as
Parrsboro's "Citizens of the Year" for 2006 by the Parrsboro and District Board of
Trade. A dinner was held in their honour at the Parrsboro Legion on Saturday, July
29th. with 150 guests attending to help them celebrate the occasion.

When Irene and Bill arrived, they were each presented with a boutonniere and a
round of applause from the many friends and relatives gathered in the hall who had
known them since the "Wheaton's Restaurant" days on Main Street in Parrsboro back
in the '50s and '60s.

After being seated at centre head table, Parrsboro's "Elastic Big Band" continued
playing music from the 'early days' to the delight of the crowd. A continuous slide
show of old photos from the restaurant years was projected on the back wall during
the evening.
Our club had a good turnout of 15 members
and guests. In addition to Irene (VE1CF) and
Bill (VE1CFK), there was Lorne (VE1BXK) and
Elaine, Peter (VE1CCL) and Treva, Jim
(VE1VIA) and Judy, Brad (VE1ZX) and Abbie
(VE1BFB), Jack (VE1CZD), Colin (VE1CMC), Ron
(VE1AMU), and Jim (VE1CHI) and Nancy. Both
Ron (VE1AMU) and Jack (CE1CZD) played in
the Elastic Big Band.

After Master of Ceremonies, Bruce Graham,
started the proceedings, he introduced
Archdeacon Robert Richmond to give the
blessing of the meal. After this, all enjoyed a
ham and salad dinner with strawberry short
cake for dessert.
After dinner, MC Bruce reminisced about his experiences in 'Wheaton's
Restaurant' and then invited anyone who wanted to 'roast' Irene and Bill to come up
to the mike. Many came up and told funny stories about the 'restaurant years'
including some of the former waitresses and their son, Billy Wheaton. The crowd
laughed at all these stories and it was clear that Irene and Bill were enjoying these
as well. Jim, VE1VIA, President of WARC, spoke on behalf of the club to
congratulate the Wheatons on their selection as 'Citizens of the Year'.

Then, Irene went to the mike and thanked the Board of Trade and all of the guests
for coming out to honour them this evening. Bill followed with his thanks and a few
stories from those restaurant years.

After this, two presentations were made to Irene and Bill. First, a framed
certificate of congratulations from Murray Scott on behalf of the Province of Nova
Scotia. Murray had a prior engagement so Angel, a Board of Trade member, made the
presentation. A second parcel was then unwrapped by Irene and it was a
characteriture of Bill and Irene with golf clubs behind Bill and a ham radio behind
Irene.
Following the presentations, Irene and Bill
were given handshakes, hugs and kisses by
their many friends and relatives. Several
photo sessions took place with all of the
former waitresses behind them followed by a
family photo as well.

 The WARC sincerely congratulates Irene
and Bill as recipients of this honour and for
their long service to the town of Parrsboro
through their restaurant and the many clubs
and organizations they not only belonged to
but supported financially.
Congratulations to Parrsboro's 2006 "Citizens of the Year"
