Here are a note and some photos
received from Lorne, VE1BXK
regarding work on the installation of
cooling fans on the VE1BHS link radios
sent Monday, May 9th, 2011:

Hi Guys,

I just finished installing the first of
two ELK-960 Delay Timers for two
Motorola M1225 UHF link radios for
VE1BHS repeater. See the attached
photos
of the install. I am testing the ELK-960
module installation now. I have
attached photos of install and
interfacing of the ELK-960 to the
Motorola
M1225 UHF radio J3 accessory jack.

All DC (13.8) is fed from the J3
accessory jack M1225 radio for the
ELK-960
and the 12 VDC fan. Each link radio at
VE1BHS will have this configuration
to keep the link radios really COOL and
will only activate when the PTT is
applied to each individual link radio. I
am currently testing the length of
time (after PTT) from 1 second to 60
minutes. I found that 30 to 60 seconds
run time is sufficient. More "on site"
testing will determine the ideal
delay time setting.

This is how it works. As soon as the
PTT from the link radio is present, the
fan will start and keep running during
the PTT period. When the PTT is no
longer present (RX Mode), the fan will
keep running the length of time the
delay has been set. If the PTT is
returns before the fan stops, then the
new PTT presence will reset the time
delay back to its starting point timer.

This is the first attempt to address
UHF link radio heat (burning up)related
issues at VE1BHS repeater site.
Installation of these configurations for
VE1BHS repeater site will take place
this spring-summer 2011.

Here is the vendor information for
both the Fan and the Delay timer
module.
