Amateur Radio Technology
 
“To provide insight into the technical and procedural aspects of amateur radio operation.”
The 5th annual Symposium for Maritime Amateur Radio Technology is scheduled for Saturday April 25th, 2020. It is hosted by the WestCumb Amateur Radio Club in Amherst Nova Scotia who will be celebrating their 40th anniversary in April.
The Symposium will be held at the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre in Springhill NS.

A meeting was held in Amherst on Feb.1st, 2020 with the organizing committee of S.M.A.R.T. to finalize plans for the 2020 SMART.
Attending the meeting was George Dewar VY2GF, William Caw VY2CAW, Kevin Burke VE1KEV, Dave Hull VE1HUL, Robert Mannette VE1RMJ and Jim Langille VE1JBL.

  • NEW: With the increase of women participating in SMART Theresa Mair VY2TAM will be setting up a table for lady amateurs here in the Maritimes. If anyone is interested in helping her out please contact her at tamair@hotmail.com

  • NEW: Public Safety & Field Communications Nova Scotia will be giving a presentation of TMR radio and how amateurs can participate at local Emergency Operation Centers across Nova Scotia with Exercise Handshake. PSFC will also be showing off one of its new Communications Command Vehicles in the arena. 

  • Entrance fee will remain at $5.00 dollars
  • Class schedule has been completed and will be posted ASAP. (Subject to change)
  • The 50/50 and Grand Prizes will be given out after the last classes of the day.
  • The WestCumb ARC flea market table will have Raspberry Pi kits for sale along with RG213 coax cable (1.25 per foot)
  • The canteen was a hit this year and will return. (tea, coffee, breakfast sandwiches, fries, chicken fingers etc.)
  • There is a third room available upstairs for amateur radio groups to have a meeting. Use Contact Form if interested. 
  • The flea market will also return in the arena.
  • The SMART barbecue will be back and include hamburgers, hot dogs, soft drinks or water and as always is free as it is included with your entry fee. Hopefully the weather will cooperate better than last.
  • There will be 2 PEI bridge passes this year, one for PEI hams and the other for everyone.
  • Ron MacKay VE1AIC will once again have a table showing off his DMR, Fusion and MMDVM projects along with Zumspot and MMDVM hotspots.
  •  John Scott VE1JS will again be available throughout the day for checking DXCC, WAS, VUCC and WAS applications for ARRL Awards.  He can also check Worked All Continents and any RAC Award as RAC Awards Manager. Further he can help anyone wishing to sign up for Logbook of the World.

NOTICE: Public Safety and Field Communications will present a class on TMR radio in the arena. This will include how amateurs can be involved with back-up communications at local EMO centres and also take part in Exercise Handshake. They will also have one of their new communications vehicle on site for amateurs to visit during the day. Class time TBA
